Fat Transfer
Facial fat grafting is a procedure that corrects lines and wrinkles in the face using your natural tissue. Plastic surgeons also refer to this procedure as autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipo injection.
If you have conditions such as the following, this procedure may be right for you:
- Facial wrinkles/folds
- Depressed Scars
- Thin lips
- Minor deformities under lower eyelids
Because fat grafting uses your tissue, there’s no risk for allergic reaction caused by the injection.
What to Expect After Fat Grafting
Some fat grafting procedures require a brief recovery period, but many patients resume normal activities immediately. Expect some swelling, bruising or redness in both the donor and recipient sites. The severity of these symptoms depends on the size and location of the treated area. Stay out of the sun for about 48 hours, or until redness and bruising subside. In the meantime, you may use makeup with sunblock protection to help conceal your condition. In some cases, swelling and puffiness in the recipient site last several weeks, especially if a large area was filled.
Results of Fat Grafting: How Long Do they Last?
The initial injection is retained for five to six months, after which nearly 45-65% is reabsorbed. The remaining fat cells may also be absorbed over several months to years depending in part, on the location of injection; in some people, there is no absorption of the remaining fat cells so that the effect lasts much longer.*
