How Botox® Works

Botox® blocks a specific chemical (acetylcholine) that causes your facial muscles to contract. When you undergo a Botox® treatment, the product is injected directly into the small facial muscles that are known to cause dynamic wrinkles. These muscles undergo a temporary paralysis, allowing your wrinkles to flatten out and become unnoticeable.

The effects of Botox® aren’t instant; it takes a few days for the treatment to take effect. They’re also not lifelong. After 4-6 months, you will need to undergo another treatment to maintain the results.

There’s no downtime after a Botox® treatment. However, you may be advised to remain upright for at least 6 hours, avoid alcohol and limit your exposure to the sun. You should see the results in about 4 to 8 days.

There are many possible treatment applications with Botox®, both cosmetic and therapeutic. Wrinkles located on the glabella, the area of the forehead above and between the brows, are a common condition for treatment. Physicians have also used Botox® as a treatment for crow’s feet, forehead lines, neck bands and excessive sweating.

Botox® FAQs

When would I be better off using Botox® alternatives?

If your wrinkles are not caused by muscle contraction, there are other treatments to consider. Products such as the following are used for treating wrinkles caused by loss of tissue volume:

Your skin may also benefit from a skin resurfacing procedure. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Aboolian may recommend a laser treatment or chemical peel if your skin appears to be damaged by sun exposure and other elements.

What are the side effects of using Botox®?

Botox® side effects include but are not limited to the following: redness, bruising, discomfort around the injection site, nausea, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, headache, and eyelid droop.

Who should not undergo Botox® treatment?

Botox® is not recommended for pregnant women, children, or persons over 65 years of age. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or related components and infection at the proposed injection site.

How long do the results of Botox® last?

In clinical trials with Botox®, the severity of glabellar lines was reduced for up to 120 days. The duration of your results may vary, so ask Dr. Aboolian when you should return for another injection.

How long does a Botox® treatment take?

This depends on how many areas are being treated and whether you choose to combine Botox® with another product or treatment. With Botox® alone, you can expect treatment to be finished in 20 minutes or less.

Does the injection hurt?

You may experience some mild discomfort. Some patients benefit from the application of a topical anesthetic, but most do not need it.
