In a joint effort by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the Plastic SurgeryFoundation (PSF) and Sientra, Inc. 2012 will mark the first annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day.
With its apt acronym, BRA will represent a new era of education regarding breast reconstruction options for women undergoing the procedure, according to a recent article in Virtual Strategy Magazine. More than 20 countries worldwide will be participating in the inaugural year of this annual event.
Jewel and Others Lend Support to First-Ever Day for Breast Reconstruction Awareness
One of the most significant aspects of this history-making day is the inclusion of Sientra, who is participating as the official breast implant sponsor of BRA Day. According to ASPS President Dr. Malcolm Z. Roth, “We are excited to have Sientra as a sponsor of BRA Day USA and feel, as a trusted supplier of breast implants and tissue expanders, they understand the impact that reconstructive surgery can have on the lives of breast cancer survivors. With their support, the ASPS and The PSF will be able to significantly raise awareness of women’s breast reconstruction options.”
As a long-time supporter of a range of women’s issues and causes, the bestselling author, singer, poet and humanitarian Jewel will lend her fame to the event as the national spokesperson of BRA Day USA. As part of her many contributions, she will participate in public service announcements, a BRA Day USA official song and a benefit concert.
The chief focus of BRA Day is the education of women regarding their options during breast reconstruction. Unlike other breast surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction, women who require breast reconstruction are frequently not informed of the options available to them. This is due to a number of factors, not the least of which is the complex emotional situation experienced by those in this difficult position.
