Gynecomastia is a condition in males where breast tissue is abnormally large. Generally, the condition appears in half or more adolescent boys but resolves 75% of the time. Sometimes, the over-development of breast tissue is a product of a metabolic disorder or a natural decrease in testosterone for older males.
Gynecomastia is a result of an increased ratio of estrogen and androgen. The cause is unknown for nearly a quarter of gynecomastia cases. There are four grades of classification for gynecomastia, grade 1 characterizing minor enlargement and grade 4 characterizing significant enlargement and excess skin.
The first thing to do if you are concerned about the appearance of excess breast tissue is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon likeDr. Andre Aboolian. During the consultation, you can determine what options are best for you.
